7 Hints on Designing a Stunning BBQ Area

With the summer practically breathing to our neck, it is obvious that we should start spending more and more time outside. A great backyard is the ideal place for catching some sun and enjoying the seasonal breeze. It is also a perfect opportunity to move the entertaining area from your living room to outdoors. Summer, backyard, friends… – do you smell it too?

Yes, the aroma of barbeque is spreading all around, and if you want to truly fascinate your guests, you should design a stunning BBQ area. It might sound complicated, but it is actually quite easy. Here are a few tips that should help you do it.

1.) Consider Adding an Open Patio

An open backyard patio is one of the most frequent ways to improve the overall look of your backyard. It can also be an ideal way to make your barbecue area stand out from both your lush greenery and lovely house. When deciding about the patio design, you should remember that it should serve both as an extension of your house and a “lobby” to your backyard. This should not be very difficult, considering the wide range of patio designs, from rustic to modernist ones.

2.) Install a Pergola

Installing a pergola is another attractive way to create an entertaining area in your backyard, without compromising its natural look. You can choose either a free-standing option or a construction attached to your home, but nevertheless, you will get an equally relaxing protection from the sun. Still, if you prefer your backyard without any elements, you can take your chances with the sun and rain.

3.) Choose Your Grill

A good grill is the most important part of your outdoor cooking area, so you should be attentive while choosing it. Some basic types of grills are:

Gas grills: cooking is quick and cleaning is usually easy, but the flavor is not as ideal.  Next you should decide if you want a convection or infrared gas grill.

Charcoal grills: provides you with a perfect smoky BBQ flavor, but requires a lot of time and effort.  The Weber Smokey Joe is one of the best options.

Electric grills: clean and simple, but compromises on taste.  These kitchen grills are mostly George Foreman branded, and inexpensive.

The design will depend on your overall landscape – you can aim for a rustic fire pit and an outdoor oven or for a modern and minimalistic grill wire. If your intention is to create an elegant cooking area, you can even go utterly posh with designer BBQ pieces.

4.) Choose the Plants

Enhance the space further by using trees, flowers and shrubs. Opt for low maintenance plants, especially if you do not have the time or affection for gardening. Also, make sure you decide for the ones that are more fire resistant than others (Agapanthus, fruit salad plant, small palms and subtropical plants).

5.) Take Care of the Lighting

Since you will probably spend some time in your BBQ area in the evenings too, you should take care of the lighting solutions. If you have a pergola or a porch, you can decide for built-in lights, mounted light fixtures or hanging lights. Here you can get really creative and use Christmas lamps, mason jars, tin cans, etc. You can also add some torches around the area for a perfectly authentic atmosphere.

6.) Place the Furniture

You will need a place to sit while you eat, right? Just make sure the sitting area looks cozy and inviting, in a way that simply calls you to sit around the fire. Most importantly, you do not have to spend a lot of money on outdoor furniture. Just visit your local flea market or repurpose some of the old pieces you have on your attic. Finally, add a fresh upholstering and a lot of throw pillows, in a subtle mixture of earthy tones and vibrant patterns.

Here are some tips if you’re stuck on what kinds of outdoor furniture you should choose.

7.) Consider the Safety Issues

Last, but not least, you must be really careful about safety issues. The flooring surface should be properly sealed to repel oil or grease stains, while the inflammable items must be far from the fire range. Also, be sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby – better safe than sorry.

A beautiful barbecue area is a great asset to every backyard. Since its perks significantly outweigh the effort you need to invest in its designing, maybe you should get to work as of… today!
